Auto-Calibration
What is Auto-Calibration?
Auto-Calibration is a feature that simplifies the CGM calibration process. When you perform a blood glucose test on your paired meter, the app automatically uses that result to calibrate your CGM sensor — no manual entry needed.
Your CGM calibration algorithm has not changed. Auto-Calibration only changes how the blood glucose value gets to your CGM: instead of you typing it in, the app receives it directly from your meter.
Getting Started
How do I turn on Auto-Calibration?
- Open the app and tap CGM Settings..
- Toggle Auto-Calibration to on.
Once enabled, the next time you perform a blood glucose test on your paired meter, the app will automatically use the result to calibrate your CGM.
How do I turn it off?
Follow the same steps above and toggle Auto-Calibration to off. You will return to the standard manual calibration workflow. You can switch between auto and manual at any time.
Do I need to pair my meter again?
No. If your blood glucose meter is already paired with the app, Auto-Calibration will work with the existing pairing. If you have not yet paired your meter, go to Settings > Devices and follow the pairing instructions.
How It Works
What happens when I do a blood glucose test?
When Auto-Calibration is on:
- You perform a fingerstick test on your meter as usual.
- Your meter sends the result to the app via Bluetooth.
- The app checks that the value is valid.
- If everything checks out, the app calibrates your CGM automatically.
- You receive a notification confirming the calibration and the value used.
The entire process happens in a few seconds after your meter completes the measurement.
Does the app change my blood glucose reading before calibrating?
No. The exact value your meter measures is the exact value used for calibration. The app does not modify, round, or adjust the reading in any way.
Can I still calibrate manually?
Yes. Manual calibration is always available, regardless of whether Auto-Calibration is on or off. You can access manual calibration from the calibration screen or by tapping "Calibrate Manually" in any failure notification.
How do I know a calibration happened?
You will see a notification that says something like: "Calibration: Auto-calibration complete. 120 mg/dL from [your meter name]." You can also check the calibration status on the app home screen, which shows when the last calibration occurred. For a full history, tap the calibration status indicator to open the Calibration History log.
Troubleshooting
Auto-calibration did not happen after my blood glucose test
There are several reasons this might occur:
Bluetooth connection issue — Your meter and phone may have lost their Bluetooth connection. Make sure your meter is within range (typically within a few meters of your phone) and that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Try performing another test with the meter nearby.
Auto-Calibration is turned off — Check that the feature is enabled in Settings > Calibration > Auto-Calibration.
App was not running — The app needs to be running (it can be in the background) to receive data from your meter. Open the app and try again.
Minimum calibration interval — If you calibrated recently, the app may delay the next calibration to protect accuracy. Wait for the cooldown period to pass and try again.
In the meantime, you can always calibrate manually.
I received a "Glucose changing rapidly" notification
This means your glucose level was rising or falling quickly when you performed the blood glucose test. During rapid glucose changes, there can be a natural lag between your capillary blood glucose (what the meter measures) and your interstitial glucose (what the CGM measures), which can reduce calibration quality.
What to do: Wait until your glucose level is more stable — ideally when the trend arrow on your CGM shows a flat or near-flat direction. Then perform another blood glucose test and the app will attempt auto-calibration again. You can also calibrate manually if you prefer not to wait.
I received a "Calibration data expired" notification
This means there was a delay between when your meter completed the measurement and when the data reached the app. This can happen if Bluetooth reconnected after a temporary disconnection, and the meter sent an older reading.
What to do: Perform a fresh blood glucose test with your meter nearby and Bluetooth connected. The app requires data to be recent (within a few minutes) to ensure calibration accuracy.
I received a "Meter not recognized" notification
This means the app received data from a blood glucose meter that is not registered to your account. This can happen if there are other meters nearby, or if you are using a new meter that has not been paired.
What to do: Go to Settings > Devices and check that your meter is listed and paired. If you have a new meter, follow the on-screen pairing instructions to register it. The app will only accept calibration data from your registered meter.
I received a "Data integrity check failed" notification
This means the data received from your meter was incomplete or could not be verified. This is usually caused by a brief Bluetooth interruption during data transfer.
What to do: This is typically a one-time occurrence. Perform another blood glucose test. If the problem persists, try unpairing and re-pairing your meter in Settings > Devices.
I received a "Value outside valid range" notification
This means the blood glucose value received from your meter was outside the range accepted for calibration (typically 20 to 600 mg/dL). This could indicate an unusual meter reading.
What to do: Verify your meter result. If the value seems correct and you believe it should be used for calibration, you can enter it manually through the manual calibration screen. If the value seems incorrect, perform another test with a fresh test strip and adequate blood sample.
Calibration failed after the value was accepted
In rare cases, the CGM may reject a calibration even though the blood glucose value itself was valid. This can happen if the CGM sensor detects an internal condition that prevents calibration at that time.
What to do: Wait a short period and try again, either by performing a new blood glucose test (with Auto-Calibration) or by calibrating manually. If calibration continues to fail, consult the CGM troubleshooting guide or contact support.
My CGM readings seem inaccurate after auto-calibration
If you notice that your CGM readings do not match your expected glucose level after an auto-calibration:
- Check the Calibration History to see what value was used. Tap the calibration status on the home screen to open the log.
- If the value looks incorrect, perform a new blood glucose test and calibrate again (either automatically or manually).
- Make sure you are calibrating during periods of stable glucose, not during rapid rises or falls.
- If readings remain inaccurate after a fresh calibration with a confirmed correct blood glucose value, contact support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Auto-Calibration change how accurate my CGM is?
No. Auto-Calibration uses the same calibration algorithm as manual calibration. The only difference is how the blood glucose value gets to the app. In fact, Auto-Calibration may help accuracy by eliminating the possibility of mistyping a value during manual entry.
Does Auto-Calibration work with any blood glucose meter?
Auto-Calibration works with the blood glucose meter models that are compatible with the app. Your meter must be paired and registered in the app. Check Settings > Devices for a list of compatible meters.
Can someone else's meter accidentally calibrate my CGM?
No. The app only accepts calibration data from the specific meter registered to your account. Even if other meters are nearby, their data will be ignored.
Does Auto-Calibration use more battery?
The impact on battery life is minimal. The app uses the same Bluetooth connection that already exists for communicating with your meter. No additional background scanning is required.
Will I be notified every time an auto-calibration happens?
Yes. You will always receive a notification when auto-calibration occurs, whether it succeeds or fails. Success notifications are brief and will collapse after a few seconds, but remain accessible in your notification center. Failure notifications stay visible until you acknowledge them.
What if I am in a meeting or sleeping and cannot check the notification?
The app home screen always shows your current calibration status, including when the last calibration occurred. If a calibration fails and you do not acknowledge the notification, the app will send a follow-up reminder. If calibration becomes overdue, the calibration status indicator will change to a warning state.
Can I undo an auto-calibration?
If you believe an auto-calibration used an incorrect value, you can perform a new calibration (either auto or manual) with a correct blood glucose value. The new calibration will override the previous one.
Is Auto-Calibration on by default?
Yes, Auto-Calibration is enabled by default. You can turn it off at any time.
